27 th July 2012

16 of us turned up at the car park in Holbury Drove in Holbury for a one and a half hour guided tour of the local nature reserve.
It is situated between the outskirts of Holbury and the start of the New Forest.
The weather was good to us.
The local parish councillor- Eddie Holtman- took us around the reserve and told us about the history of the land from William the Conquerors time to now. Also how they managed to add small parcels of land to the original reserve as it became available from local sources and various property developers.
The monks of Bealieu held the land as a grange for several hundred years until Henry VIII dissolved them and took the land for his favourites.
The monks(probably Anglo Saxons and they supervised) many "ponds"and diverted the river in order to improve the agriculture production.
It was all very interesting and of course the general public is allowed free access to this site at all times.
There is no Nature walk in August and so the next one should be on Friday 28th
September. location to be decided
