January Meeting

Thirteen of us met at Blashford Lakes Nr Ringwood on another cold day but at least it didn't rain. The short film shows the central study centre between Hide and Ellingham Lakes.

From Mike

A quiet, milder day at Blashford Lakes with some notable absentees that we might reasonably have expected such as Kingfisher, Little Egret and Pintail. Even so we managed 40+ species including 30 Chaffinches, a few of which had a fungal infection of the legs and feet. This shows as a whitish bootee effect and clearly results in discomfort as the birds sometimes sit down to feed and they can also lose their feet in extreme cases. The ailment does not seem to affect Greenfinches but I once had a badly infected male Bullfinch on my bird table.
Our next meeting is on Friday 23 Feb 2007 at Normandy Marsh, near Lymington, 10 am. Park near the outdoor swimming pool which is fortunately closed. I am not much of a 'bird lister' but perhaps we could aim for 50 species on that day....there is a reason! Mike.
