Next month's meeting 24th November 10am at Calshot. Meet opposite to toilets approaching the activities centre.

Fourteen including one guest turned up for the Denny Wood bird watch along the tarmac road that ran through the closed camp site. Surprisingly a very popular location as we had to clear the road for passing cars many times in our two hour amble. The sun came out for us although it was a chilly start and we all enjoyed the outing. Quite a few birds were in evidence which Mike will enlarge on. We saw a stampede of ponies and a few cattle on our round trip.

Beautiful scenery with most trees still green.

Sun dappled spot.

From Mike
Autumn mornings can hardly come much better than that which we enjoyed in Denny Wood with warming sunshine and not a breath of wind. Predictably, birds were not easy to find but a couple of smart Marsh Tits (thought to be declining locally) were taking advantage of the unofficial "feeding area" near the car park.
Chaffinches and Nuthatches showed in the roadside oaks but the Tree Creepers and Goldcrests frequently heard were much harder to see, as were the occasional "flyover" Redwings. Also overhead a trickle of Skylarks and Meadow Pipits migrated westward and a solitary Redpoll passed high over "firing its gun".
Carrion Crows cursed, Rooks cawed and Jackdaws chuckled their endless banter around us. Members of the crow genus are renowned for their intelligence so they may well know that we recorded less than 30species but overall we had an enjoyable and peaceful walk with odd Red Admirals, Common Darters and some handsome fungi adding to the interest.
