30th May at Stanpit Marshes

For our May walk we went to Stanpit Marsh on a quiet, warm day just after high water but found the area rather bare of birds compared with autumn and winter time and there were few birders too, just four of us, our smallest ever group.
However, we still enjoyed the earthy brown Sand Martins hawking around us for insects and our patience was rewarded with good views of one of the local Reed Warblers twanging its guitar from the tip of the delicate stems, followed by a Reed Bunting feeding a youngster.
Also present were many Starling families and handful of Linnets and overall we recorded more than 35 species.
Our next venue will be Lower Test Reserve, 10am, 25 July 2008; meet at the Salmon Leap pub.
