March meeting at Blackwater car park
Eleven of us met up once again for another cold morning bird watching - at least it was dry - for an interesting wander around amongst the tall American redwoods We spotted 22 species of birds

For our short walk around the Blackwater Arboretum area we had a cool, dry day but we would have liked some brightness to help us find the birds singing overhead. Siskins were noisy and seen a couple of times but the elusive Firecrests, local celebrities, could not be seen although at least 4 were singing including two strongly and at close range. Goldcrests and various tits also seen, as were Nuthatch, Tree Creeper, Chaffinch and a single Chiffchaff. We had nice views too of a Song Thrush and a fine pair of Bullfinches.
All the woodpeckers were around, with 'drumming' heard from both the "spotteds" and the Lesser reinforced its presence with several long, strong, vocal calls. We also saw a group of Fallow Deer and a single Roe in transitional coat.
Next meeting on Friday 25 May 2007, 10am at the New Forest Reptillary. See New Forest Reptillary for information about the CCTV events.
Regards Mike
